“N.V. Purperhoedenveem” - Amsterdam Doorway, Oil on Wood Panel

A small, jewel-like architectural realist study of a landmark Amsterdam doorway — the entrance to the former headquarters of the N.V. Purperhoedenveem, signed lower left. The artist has rendered the doorway with meticulous, trompe-l’œil precision: the weathered stone blockwork, the arched pediment with its round oculus window, the deep red paneled double doors, and the original gilt-lettered “N.V. Purperhoedenveem” signboard are all faithfully captured at intimate postcard scale. The tightly cropped, frontal composition and fine detail sit within a small but enduring genre among Dutch realist painters: portraits of Amsterdam’s iconic facades and doorways.

A charming, well-executed miniature of a documented, still-standing piece of Amsterdam commercial architecture!
